CP501
Balance due — a reminder
A CP501 is a reminder notice. The IRS sent an earlier bill for a balance on one of your tax accounts and hasn't received payment or a response, so it is asking again. It is still early in the process.
The IRS's own page says that if the balance goes unpaid and unanswered, it can file a Notice of Federal Tax Lien — a public claim that can affect credit. Responding by the due date, even just to arrange payments, keeps things in the routine lane.
- This notice and the earlier one (usually a CP14) if you have it
- Your tax return for the year shown
- Proof of any payments already made
- Notes on anything you already sent or told the IRS
- Verifying the balance against IRS transcripts before anything is paid
- Setting up the right payment arrangement rather than the fastest one
- Requesting an appeal under the Collection Appeals Program if collection action is the concern
- Getting penalties reviewed for possible removal
